Cyanotype
Initiation Workshops
Two sessions in which light becomes medium, image becomes presence, and photography reveals what ordinary sight cannot see.
The cyanotype is one of photography's oldest processes — a slow chemistry of iron and sunlight that produces prints of a deep, unearthly blue. At TinyGallery, we bring it back not as nostalgia, but as a way of looking again: at images, at symbols, at the invisible currents that run beneath the surface of things.
Each workshop is built around the current exhibition — Grand Art in Photography: Symbolism, Esotericism, Occultism — and draws on its archive of images, ideas and atmosphere. You will leave with prints you made yourself, and perhaps with a different sense of what a photograph can hold.
Workshop 01Apparition
What does a photograph retain that the eye does not? This workshop opens with a brief historical survey of photography's long entanglement with the unseen: spirit images, double exposures, the trace left by bodies that were no longer there. We move through the archive of the current exhibition, pausing on images where absence speaks as loudly as presence.
Then we make. Using the cyanotype process and a selection of copyright-free images — as well as prints from TinyGallery's own collection — each participant creates three images. The choice of what to expose, what to overlay, what to leave in shadow is yours.
What the session includes
Historical introduction to photography and the invisible (15 min) — followed by two hours of hands-on cyanotype making. Images printed on paper using light-sensitive solution, iron salts and water. No prior experience required. All materials supplied.
Workshop 02Astrology
This workshop begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of astrology: the solar sign, the lunar sign, the character of each and the tension between them. No prior knowledge assumed. We then move into image-making, each participant selecting and printing two cyanotypes rooted in their own astral coordinates — one for the sun, one for the moon.
Bring your date, time and place of birth if you know them. If you don't, we'll work with what the sky offers.
What the session includes
Introduction to astrology — solar and lunar signs (30 min) — followed by two hours of cyanotype making. Images are created from copyright-free source material and your personal astral coordinates. All materials supplied. No prior experience required.
